The artist

Forty years. One pair of hands.

01

Roots.

Ismael was born in Zaragoza, Spain, in 1963. His father, a woodworker, taught him to build with his hands. His mother, a painter, put the first brush in them. His grandfather made clay roof tiles in Ariño, Teruel. The ruins of that kiln still stand.

02

Venezuela.

At nine, he moved with his family to Venezuela. He studied drawing and painting for four years under the master Luis Rodríguez, and later at the Arturo Michelena Academy and the Centro Piloto Luis Eduardo Chávez in Valencia. Surrealism and the Bauhaus shaped his eye. The teachings of G. I. Gurdjieff shaped everything else.

03

Clay.

Ceramics began as a way to support a family and became his most complete teacher. He learned it by asking, testing and testing again. With his wife, Moñi, he ran a ceramics workshop in Venezuela until 2000.

04

The road.

His studios followed his life: Valencia, then Panama City in 2014, then Madrid in 2016, where he worked among ceramicists at the Pottery Gym and made bonsai pots his specialty.

05

Cebreros.

In September 2020 he and Moñi settled in Cebreros, in a small house at the foot of a mountain. It is his fifth studio. Its first kiln is called Pulgarcito, Little Thumb.

“Soft as a child, the clay keeps every mark you give it. The fire makes it permanent. People are the same.”
